Installing a home EV chargepoint in the UK
Home EV charging in the UK starts with permission to use the parking space and an assessment of the electrical connection. A driveway, shared residential parking and a public street require different decisions. Sources checked: 14 October 2026.
Parking and permissions come first
Confirm who can authorise the charger and cable route before ordering work. For on-street parking, a permanent cross-pavement solution requires highway authority consent and planning permission where applicable. An authorised channel does not reserve the public parking space outside your home.
The Department for Transport guidance concerns authorities in England. Obtain the relevant local decision for your address; do not treat this English guidance as permission throughout the UK.
Network procedures in Great Britain
The installer determines whether the project follows connect and notify or apply to connect. In the first route, notification reaches the distribution network operator (DNO) within 28 days. In the second, authorisation is required before connection. Ask the installer to identify the applicable route and retain the notification or authorisation.
The government registration guidance explicitly covers England, Scotland and Wales. It does not establish the procedure for Northern Ireland. For an address there, confirm the required steps directly with the responsible network operator.
Check the grant before installation
OZEV's announced changes from April 2026 set a maximum of £500 per socket for the three domestic schemes below, with funding announced until 31 March 2027. These are programme ceilings, not installation prices or guaranteed awards.

The on-street scheme record requires an eligible vehicle and no exclusive private parking. It covers eligible UK properties outside the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. The application cannot be retrospective. Check the live scheme conditions before making a financial commitment.
The renters and flat owners scheme requires a designated private off-street space, legal rights and permanent access, relevant third-party permissions and eligible vehicle, equipment and installer. Receive OZEV's eligibility notification before installation.
Smart settings need deliberate choices
The smart chargepoint rules cover qualifying equipment sold for private home or workplace use in Great Britain. They include smart functions, an editable charging schedule and a randomised delay. Northern Ireland, public or rapid charging and certain earlier sales fall outside this guidance's stated scope.
Set the schedule to suit your electricity contract. A smart charger does not, by itself, establish your charging price.
