AC EV charging time calculator

Estimate a constant-power AC session while making the vehicle limit, site limit and charging-loss assumption explicit.

This estimator uses the lowest of EVSE, vehicle and site power. It does not model a DC rapid-charging curve.

Actual results vary with temperature, auxiliaries, battery management and changing power. Use a manufacturer curve or measured average power for DC charging.

Formula, example and limits

The tool calculates battery energy from usable capacity and the change in state of charge, converts it to grid energy with the selected efficiency, then divides by the lowest selected power limit.

Ebattery = Cusable × ΔSOC · Egrid = Ebattery ÷ η · t = Egrid ÷ min(PEVSE, Pvehicle, Psite)

Reproducible example: 60 kWh usable, 20% to 80%, 85% efficiency and 7 kW at every limit gives 36 kWh stored, 42.35 kWh from the grid and about 6.05 hours.

  • The 2.3–22 kW options are AC scenario inputs, not typical national values or guarantees of available power.
  • The 85% starting point comes from an EU modelling assumption and remains editable because real losses vary.
  • Peak DC power is excluded: it changes with state of charge, temperature and the vehicle's charging curve.
